Digital learning materials or course book.
5 adventure dives supervised by a certified instructor.
Rental of primary diving equipment (BCD, regulator, wetsuit, fins, mask, snorkel).
Advanced Open Water Diver certification upon successful completion of the course.

Why take this course?

The Advanced Open Water Diver course will give you the confidence and skills to explore a wider variety of dive sites. You’ll become a more independent diver, able to plan and execute more complex dives safely. It’s the perfect step to turn your passion for diving into a true adventure!

Rescue Diver:

The Rescue Diver course is one of the most challenging and rewarding scuba diving courses. It prepares you to anticipate, prevent, and manage problems and emergencies, both for yourself and for other divers. While many Rescue Diver courses consist of 3 or 4 open water dives, some may include additional sessions, for a total of 5 dives, allowing for more in-depth practice.

Here is a general description of the Rescue Diver course with 5 dives.

Course Objectives

The Rescue Diver course aims to develop your skills in accident prevention and emergency management. You will learn to:

Recognize and manage stress in divers.
Intervene in cases of panic or distress in a diver.
Manage minor and major emergencies.
Perform self-rescues.
Implement procedures for searching for missing divers.
Assist an unconscious diver on the surface and underwater.
Administer first aid and emergency oxygen.
Develop a diving emergency plan.

Prerequisites

Before starting the Rescue Diver course, you must generally:

Be certified as an Advanced Open Water Diver (or equivalent, e.g., Advanced Adventurer SSI) and have completed an underwater orientation dive.
Have completed first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training within the last 24 months (e.g., the Emergency First Response (EFR) course). If not, this training is often integrated into or offered before the start of the Rescue course.
Be at least 12 years old (with restrictions for Junior Rescue Divers).

Course Structure (typical example with 5 dives)

The course generally takes place over several days and combines theory, confined water exercises (pool or sheltered area), and open water scenarios (ocean, lake).

1. Knowledge Development (Theory)

This section can be completed online (eLearning) before the practical course, or in a classroom setting with your instructor. It covers:

Rescue psychology.
Recognizing stress in divers.
Managing accidents and emergencies.
Equipment problems.
Emergency procedures and rescue equipment.
Diving physiology and pressure-related injuries.

2. Confined Water Exercises (1-2 days, often combined with theory or dives)

These sessions allow you to master basic techniques in a controlled environment:

Self-rescue: Managing cramps, equipment problems, and running out of air. Recognition and Assistance: Identifying and assisting a diver in distress (tired, panicked) on the surface and underwater.
Emergency Procedures: Rapid response to minor problems.
Emergency Equipment Management: Use of signal floats, first aid kits, emergency oxygen.

3. Open Water Dives (typically 4-5 dives, if the course is structured with dedicated dives for certain scenarios)

This is where you apply and combine the skills learned in realistic scenarios. If a course includes 5 dives, the schedule might look something like this:

Dive 1: Practice assistance techniques (surface and underwater)

Managing a fatigued diver on the surface.
Assisting a panicked diver on the surface.
Managing a diver’s cramps underwater.
Recovering lost items (e.g., mask, regulator).

Dive 2: Search and Recovery

Learning different underwater search patterns (spiral, U, etc.) with the aid of a compass.
Simulation of a search for a “missing” diver.
Techniques for ascent and transporting an unconscious diver underwater.

Dive 3: Major Emergency Scenarios

Ascent of an unconscious diver from the bottom.
Application of surface rescue breathing techniques during transport.
Methods for extricating an unconscious diver from the water.

Dive 4: Complex “Diving Accident” Scenario

Diving accident scenario where you must manage the scene, administer first aid, call for help, and transport the victim.
Use of emergency oxygen and completion of accident reports.

Dive 5: Final Assessment or Advanced Scenario

Often, this fifth dive is a final assessment where you must manage a complex emergency situation from start to finish, applying all the skills you have learned.
Alternatively, it can be used to reinforce specific skills or introduce a more advanced scenario (e.g., multiple victims, environmental management).

Benefits of the Rescue Diver Course

This course is often described by divers as the most demanding but also the most rewarding.
